Capel Counselling and Coaching

I provide a safe and confidential space to talk without judgement.

A bit about me....

Hello, I’m Judy. I offer counselling for adults and young persons, helping to navigate life's ups and downs. I am originally from the UK and moved to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) over 20 years ago, where I offer sessions both in person and remotely through Microsoft Teams.

After many years working in Human Resources Management, I decided to learn more about how I could better support mental health. This was fuelled by a change in my own personal goals, a category 5 hurricane and shortly afterwards, a global pandemic!!

Initially, I earned a Postgraduate Certificate in Psychology from the University of Liverpool followed by a Masters of Science in the Neuroscience and Psychology of Mental Health at King’s College London. I am especially interested in the mind-body connection and my dissertation focused on using mindfulness and yoga to reduce long covid symptoms.

Subsequently, I gained a Diploma in Humanistic Creative Counselling from Dunamis Therapy Hub in the UK, where I gained hands-on experience to put theory into practice.

I love learning and continue to pursue additional learning and have undertaken further specialist training in Coaching, Polyvagal theory, Breathwork, Counselling children and young people, Neuro-Linguistic programming, Chronic sleep issues, Suicide risk and prevention, Trauma, and Disordered eating.

In addition to my private practice, I am privileged to volunteer my counselling skills with St. Wilfrid's Hospice in Eastbourne, providing bereavement support to families dealing with loss.

I also work with Mind, a leading mental health charity in the UK, supporting individuals facing challenges like anxiety, depression, low self esteem and stress.

Additionally, I have recently volunteered with our community mental health team delivering emotional literacy training in local schools.

I am a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (MBACP) which means that I adhere to their code of ethics and counselling framework and undertake regular supervision.

My Approach

I am an integrative counsellor which means that I utilise different modalities to help you to gain greater self awareness and facilitate ways in which you can work through issues that you might be facing. Counselling might be for a relatively short period for a specific goal or it may be on a longer term basis where more support is needed.

Above all, I offer a chance to reflect on the difficulties or problems you are experiencing in a safe and confidential environment, with someone from outside your day-to-day life. Together we can explore your situation in a way that leads to fresh perspectives - and perhaps a new understanding of yourself. Sometimes we will work creatively to unlock what might be hiding under the surface and offer deeper insights. Counselling isn’t about giving you solutions or advice, but empowering you to make your own changes. My approach is underpinned by the belief that we all can heal and thrive if we feel truly heard, supported and unjudged.

I am a person-centred therapist, which means my job is to accompany you on your journey - as a fellow traveller and sometimes guide - towards what the founder of person-centred counselling, Carl Rogers, called ‘self-actualisation’. Person-centred work is focussed on empathy, a non-judgemental approach and providing emotional support; everyone has a built-in motivation to reach for their full potential, but sometimes need a bit of support to get there!

Get in touch

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how I work, or to arrange an appointment. This enables us to discuss the reasons you are thinking of coming to therapy, whether it could be helpful for you and whether I am the right therapist to help.

I offer a free 15 minute initial call to explore whether we are right for each other: I will also be honest with you if I don’t think I am the best person for your particular issue and can refer you to someone more suitable.
