Capel Counselling and Coaching

Offering a safe and confidential space to talk without judgement.

A bit about me....

Thank you for visiting my site. My name is Judy and I offer counselling for adults, both individuals and couples, providing a space for you to navigate whatever difficulties you might be facing.

Taking the first step to seek help might seem daunting. Even though many of us will visit a doctor to fix a physical ailment, we don't always think of our mental and emotional well-being in the same way. Counselling is one way that we can help us to take care of our mind, and heal from painful and challenging emotional states.

My background is that I am originally from the UK and relocated to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) over 25 years ago. I have an office in Roadtown, which is centrally located, yet very discreet, and I also work remotely through a variety of online platforms with clients both inside and outside the BVI.

My own counselling journey started when I experienced some challenges in my health that felt connected to a long period of stress that I had tried my best to ignore and push through. After many years working in Human resources, I decided to retrain as a Counsellor and help others work through their own challenges. I have always been genuinely interested in people and wanted to learn more about how I could support them in a professional capacity.

My training

I found this path later on in my career after completing my first degree at the age of 22. Some 20 plus years later I decided to go back to school! Consequently, I have a Postgraduate Certificate in Psychology from the University of Liverpool and a Masters of Science in the Neuroscience and Psychology of Mental Health at King’s College London.

I am a qualified Integrative Counsellor with a Diploma in Humanistic Creative Counselling from Dunamis Therapy Hub in the UK. I have also completed training in working with couples with the British Institute of Emotionally Focused Therapy.

I love learning and continue to pursue additional courses and qualifications. I have undertaken further specialist training in Grief counselling, Coaching, Working with ADHD, Polyvagal theory, Breathwork, Menopause, Counselling children and young people, CBT-i (Insomnia), Suicide risk and prevention, Trauma, and Eating Disorders/Disordered eating.

In addition to my private practice, I have been privileged to volunteer my counselling skills with St. Wilfrid's Hospice in Eastbourne, providing bereavement support to families dealing with the loss of a loved one.

I have also worked with Mind, a leading mental health charity in the UK, supporting individuals facing challenges like anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, chronic illness, abuse, and stress.

Additionally, I have recently volunteered with our community mental health team delivering emotional literacy training in local schools.

I am a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (MBACP) which means that I adhere to their code of ethics and counselling framework and undertake regular supervision.

I am also a member of ICEEFT (International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy).

My Approach

I am an integrative counsellor which means that I utilise different modalities to help you to gain greater self awareness and facilitate ways in which you can work through issues that you might be facing. Counselling might be for a relatively short period for a specific goal or it may be on a longer term basis where more support is needed. In my couples practice I am especially interested in how attachment theory influences lifelong patterns of relating and how talking therapy can help to highlight and loosen areas of stuckness. This can really help to deepen a couple's understanding of each other and strengthen their connection in a much more profound and sustained way.

Above all, I offer a chance to reflect on the difficulties or problems you are experiencing in a safe and confidential environment, with someone from outside your day-to-day life. Together we can explore your situation in a way that leads to fresh perspectives - and perhaps a new understanding of yourself. Sometimes we will work creatively to unlock what might be hiding under the surface and offer deeper insights. Counselling isn’t about giving you solutions or advice, but empowering you to make your own changes. My approach is underpinned by the belief that we all can heal and thrive if we feel truly heard, supported and unjudged.

I am a person-centred therapist, which means my job is to accompany you on your journey - as a fellow traveller and sometimes guide - towards what the founder of person-centred counselling, Carl Rogers, called ‘self-actualisation’. Person-centred work is focussed on empathy, a non-judgemental approach and providing emotional support; everyone has a built-in motivation to reach for their full potential, but sometimes needs a bit of support to get there! I also utilise other modalities such as Gestalt, Existential and Attachment theory to enrich the scope of our work together.

Get in touch

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how I work, or to arrange an appointment. This enables us to discuss the reasons you are thinking of coming to therapy, whether it could be helpful for you and whether I am the right therapist to help.

I offer a free 15 minute initial call to explore whether we are right for each other: I will also be honest with you if I don’t think I am the best person for your particular issue and can refer you to someone more suitable.
